Kamala Harris Signals Interest in Progressive Policies for 2028 Campaign

Former Vice President Kamala Harris appears to be gearing up for a potential 2028 presidential campaign. Recently, she engaged with progressive groups and proposed policy changes, aiming to strengthen her appeal among the Democratic Party’s progressive wing.

Harris recently participated in the National Urban League Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. There, she endorsed several progressive policy positions. Notably, she expressed support for expanding the Supreme Court and reconsidering the Electoral College. This move shows her willingness to align with ideas she had previously not promoted during her 2024 campaign.

“We must allow for a real conversation about revisiting certain things,” Harris said in her speech. “I know this is gonna be controversial coming from me, in particular. We need to revisit the Electoral College.”

In 2024, Harris lost both the Electoral College and the popular vote to President Donald Trump. Her recent statements also highlighted the need to expand the Supreme Court to 13 justices, similar to the number of district courts. While Harris had supported term limits for Supreme Court justices before, the idea of court expansion was new to her platform.

Besides judicial reforms, Harris also proposed revisiting the statehood of Puerto Rico, in addition to her existing support for Washington, D.C., statehood.

Despite embracing these progressive positions, Harris has not yet confirmed her candidacy for the 2028 election. Speaking about her plans, she stated, “I have not made a decision. I am fully, sincerely, focused on these midterms.” The comments came amidst predictions by Democratic insiders suggesting Harris as the leading contender for the 2028 nomination.

Reports indicate Harris reached out to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and pro-Palestinian activists. Her efforts to build connections with these influencers suggest strategic groundwork for a future campaign.

When asked at the National Action Network’s 35th Anniversary Convention whether she planned to run again, Harris replied, “I might. I might. I’m thinking about it… I’ll keep you posted.”

Harris has intensified her outreach to progressive Democrats, including private meetings with figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. Their meeting took place during a Black women’s empowerment summit in Chicago, signaling Harris’s intent to collaborate with prominent progressive voices.
