As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare for their Week 1 matchup against the Denver Broncos on “Monday Night Football,” uncertainty persists about whether quarterback Patrick Mahomes will take the field. The game is only three weeks away, and head coach Andy Reid has not confirmed Mahomes’ readiness.
Reid informed reporters that while Mahomes is progressing well in his recovery, predictions about his return remain undecided. “He’s doing great,” Reid commented. “We’ll just see. I’m literally taking it day by day. There are no predictions here on anything. But if the doctors and the trainers and everybody that are involved with this give him an OK — and then most of all, if he feels like he can — then we’ll address that when we get there.”
Despite Mahomes’ optimism about playing in Week 1, his return comes after he suffered a severe ACL injury in Week 15 last year. A nine-month recovery would be considered quick for such injuries, yet his return raises concerns about his readiness to play at his usual level.
“I think there’s no doubt that physiologically Patrick Mahomes is fine,” Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees expressed to TMZ. “There’s certainly that, I think, that mental hurdle to get over… to say like, ‘Hey, I can step into that, right?’ Like, ‘I can take that hit.’ You know, can I just get past that psychological barrier of being able to turn it loose and not think about it at all?”
“I’m confident that the best of Patrick Mahomes is still ahead of us.”
Brees’ confidence in Mahomes may seem bold as the quarterback nears 31, having undergone major surgery. There are also significant concerns surrounding the team’s wide receiver lineup, and analysts suggest Mahomes may need to deliver extraordinary performances to propel the Chiefs back to the Super Bowl.
Before his injury, Mahomes had an impressive record, throwing for 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions during the previous season. The transition from offensive coordinator Matt Nagy to Eric Bieniemy, who was part of Mahomes’ successful past seasons, adds another layer to the team’s dynamics.
