Kansas’ Senate race is becoming unexpectedly competitive for Republicans, in a state where Democrats have struggled to win a Senate seat for nearly a century. A recent Emerson College Polling/Nexstar Media survey indicates Democrat Adam Hamilton holds a slight lead with 45 percent compared to Republican Senator Roger Marshall’s 43 percent, while Libertarian David Graham captures 4 percent. This poll, conducted between September 15-16, marks the first independent survey of the cycle to show Hamilton ahead.
Marshall is vying for a second term. Hamilton, having founded the nation’s largest United Methodist Church, aims to be the first Democrat elected to the Senate from Kansas since 1932. Support for Marshall comes from Vice President JD Vance, scheduled to visit Olathe, Kansas, to bolster Marshall’s candidacy.
Polling Insights and Election Forecasts
Despite the surprising poll results, Marshall remains the favorite. The latest Emerson College poll highlights the race could be closer than anticipated. Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, noted that Democrats have their best chance to secure their first Senate seat since 1932, driven partly by Hamilton’s strong appeal to independent voters.
Past polls showed varied results. A co/efficient poll conducted September 8-10 among 915 likely voters had Marshall leading Hamilton 49 percent to 44 percent, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.22 percentage points. Meanwhile, a Global Strategy Group poll fromAugust 12-16 among 800 likely voters showed Hamilton ahead by a narrow margin, 44 percent to 43 percent. An August poll by Public Policy Polling showed Marshall slightly leading at 46 percent to 45 percent.
Election forecasters agree the race has become more competitive since Hamilton’s nomination win in August, shifting the status from “solid Republican” to “likely Republican.” Market predictions are more favorable for Marshall, with Kalshi giving him a 74 percent chance of winning, versus 26 percent for Hamilton. Polymarket also slightly favors Marshall.
The Impact of Independents and Key Issues
The Emerson poll reveals independents as a critical factor. Hamilton leads among them with a 42 percent to 27 percent margin. Favorability ratings show a close match, with Marshall at 41 percent favorable to 48 percent unfavorable, while Hamilton is at 41 percent favorable to 30 percent unfavorable.
President Trump’s approval in Kansas stands at 40 percent, with Kelly, the governor, receiving a 46 percent approval. Common issues are driving voter decisions, with the economy leading at 48 percent, followed by healthcare, threats to democracy, and housing affordability.
A State with Contrasting Political Dynamics
Kansas showcases an intriguing political landscape. Although the state traditionally supports Republicans, Democrat Laura Kelly has been elected governor twice, and a 2022 ballot maintaining abortion rights resonated with 59 percent of voters. Marshall relies on the Republican coalition, focusing on rural voters to maintain Senate control. Hamilton presents himself as a centrist, drawing from his congregation that includes Democrats, Republicans, and independents.
Introducing Adam Hamilton
Hamilton is a first-time candidate, having founded Church of the Resurrection in Leawood. From humble beginnings in 1990, Hamilton’s church expanded to 25,000 members with multiple locations. His Democratic nomination win came with a faith-based moderate campaign, leading to substantial fundraising efforts.
Marshall’s Medical Lawsuits
Marshall faced scrutiny for lawsuits against over 700 patients regarding unpaid medical bills during his career. The suits targeted many from low-income rural Barton County, where rates of uninsured residents and poverty are high. Campaign defense highlights Marshall’s record of treating all patients and claims that legal measures were standard practices.
