The Kawhi Leonard era has come to an end in Los Angeles. NBA insider Shams Charania reports that the Clippers are finalizing a significant trade, sending Leonard back to the Toronto Raptors. This move marks the end of a period characterized by high hopes and limited postseason achievements.
The trade terms include the Raptors giving up forward Brandon Ingram, guard Gradey Dick, two future first-round picks, a first-round pick swap, and two second-round picks. This decision indicates a major shift for both Toronto and Los Angeles. Leonard returns to the Raptors, the team he led to the 2019 NBA championship, while the Clippers transition from a time that never resulted in an NBA Finals appearance, despite substantial investment by owner Steve Ballmer.
When Leonard joined the Clippers in 2019, expectations were high for them to become championship contenders. However, the past seven seasons have been marred by injuries and playoff disappointments. The Clippers managed to win just three playoff series during this period, with Leonard’s chronic knee issues and playoff absences hindering their potential. This culminated in the major trade announced recently.
For Toronto, the deal represents an attempt to replicate past success. Leonard remains under contract through 2027 and is set to earn more than $50 million next season. Reports suggest he hopes to extend his contract with a two-year, $126.1 million deal to conclude his career in Canada.
Leonard’s pairing with the rising star Scottie Barnes positions the Raptors as a compelling team in the Eastern Conference.
