Keith Urban, renowned for his versatility in music, takes a surprising turn with his 2026 album, “Flow State.” This album features a collection of yacht rock covers and an original song in collaboration with the legendary Michael McDonald.
Urban’s Journey to ‘Flow State’
The album emerged from recording sessions at Urban’s newly acquired studio, The Sound, in Nashville. Initially, Urban and his team recorded a few yacht rock tracks for fun. However, the sessions blossomed into a full album. Urban describes yacht rock as the ideal genre for spontaneity and joy in music creation.
Preserving Classics While Innovating
“Flow State” maintains the essence of classic songs while incorporating Urban’s unique sound. The approach involved extending outros with new elements, like keyboard and acoustic guitar, as demonstrated in “Summer Breeze.” Collaborations in the album feature notable artists such as Little Big Town and John Mayer.
An Original Collaboration
The album’s original song, “We Go Back,” highlights Urban’s collaboration with Michael McDonald. Written in 2020 with BRELAND, Sam Sumser, and Sean Small, the song gained a special touch when McDonald joined the project. Urban reflects on the dream of McDonald singing the chorus becoming reality six years later.
A Comforting Sound During Difficult Times
Urban chose these tracks as a soothing contrast to today’s divisive world. Following his recent divorce from Nicole Kidman, Urban finds solace in music that offers escape and joy. “Flow State” serves as a reminder of the comfort and unity music can provide.
Urban’s album offers a brief moment of serenity, inviting listeners to pause and enjoy the simplicity of connection through music.
