Kelsey Grammer Talks Hollywood’s Reinterpretations

Kelsey Grammer, known for his role in “Frasier,” recently appeared on “The Katie Miller Podcast” to discuss Hollywood’s modern trends. Hosted by Katie Miller, spouse of White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, the podcast explored Hollywood’s approach to classic stories.

Miller observed Hollywood’s tendency to reshape classics like “The Odyssey.” She noted, “Hollywood seems determined to reinvent nearly every classic and distort it slightly to fit their views.” Grammer admitted he hasn’t watched “The Odyssey,” acknowledging some entertainment feels overwhelming.

Grammer pointed out Hollywood’s portrayal of history may not always be accurate. “I think old England is probably full of White people,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of respecting historical context culturally.

Discussions included examples of Hollywood’s controversial adaptations. One mentioned was Disney’s “Snow White,” which reportedly incurred a substantial loss. Pixar, under Disney, is shifting away from themes that proved unsuccessful. Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter told The Wall Street Journal the aim now is to create movies, not “therapy.” Grammer remarked, “Eventual flopping doesn’t work so well.” He appreciated the new adaptation of “The Odyssey” despite potential cultural shifts.

Emily Wilson’s translation of Homer’s “The Odyssey” influenced director Christopher Nolan’s adaptation. The film faced critique for modernized dialogue and altering Odysseus’s character. Yet, unlike other adaptations, it found box office success while provoking mixed reactions from audiences and critics.
