Kelsey Plum’s Future with the Los Angeles Sparks in Question

Two off-seasons ago, All-Star guard Kelsey Plum requested a trade from the Las Vegas Aces. During her time with the Aces, she secured two WNBA titles. In January 2025, Plum transitioned to the Los Angeles Sparks.

Reflecting on her decision, Plum shared with Sue Bird last summer, “I just remember thinking in that offseason, ‘If you really are about it, and you really believe that you are as good as you think you are, and you really think you can impact winning at the highest level, there’s only one way to find out.'”

Plum has actively worked to help the Sparks reach their first playoff spot since 2020. However, her efforts alone aren’t enough. The Sparks have made questionable personnel choices, which might lead to Plum moving again.

“Plum signed a one-year deal valued at $999,999 in free agency,” reported Annie Costabile for The Athletic.

Sources within the league, speaking anonymously due to the sensitivity of the information, suggest the 31-year-old guard does not plan to re-sign with the Sparks. Neither Plum nor her agent, Zack Miller of WME Basketball, commented on her future plans when asked by The Athletic.

The WNBA trade deadline is approaching on August 2. Costabile points out Plum as a key trade candidate, yet the Sparks have not engaged in significant trade discussions regarding her so far.

Early in the season, Plum was a top scorer and a vital offensive presence in the WNBA. Injuries have limited her participation to 12 games, though. After spraining her ankle in late May, she missed a week of play. She returned for six games in June before a lower left leg injury sidelined her since June 24.

Plum’s injury history is not extensive, which means even if the Sparks retain her, she should attract significant interest in free agency next offseason.
