The Alabama Crimson Tide is traveling to face the Kentucky Wildcats in an early-season SEC matchup on Saturday. Known for their historical success, Alabama is keen to prevent an upset.
Kentucky head coach Will Stein is calling for fans to create an intense atmosphere. He hopes the support will help his team achieve their first victory over Alabama since 1997, a game that ended with Kentucky triumphing 40-34 in overtime.
Historically, Kentucky has only defeated Alabama twice. A simulation predicts a third victory for the Wildcats on Saturday, forecasting a significant 42-21 win. Yahoo Sports’ simulation using the “College Football 27” video game suggests Alabama, favored by 10 points, might lose by three touchdowns.
A victory of this magnitude would be significant for Kentucky. Aside from the close win in 1997, Kentucky only beat Alabama once more in 1922 by a score of 6-0. Achieving 42 points would be their highest score ever against Alabama. Previously, their maximum was 40 points in 1997, and 27 points in a 1988 loss.
Quarterback Kenny Minchey and six players showcasing rushing strength in their season opener underscore Kentucky’s scoring potential. However, Alabama’s defense is formidable, featuring preseason All-American safety Bray Hubbard and star pass rusher Yhonzae Pierre. If Kentucky can score a few touchdowns, enthusiastic fans could help derail Alabama’s offensive efforts, especially with first-year starter Keelon Russell under pressure.
Stein emphasizes the role of fan involvement. “I want [fans] in there 45 to 30 minutes before, in their seat, standing up, screaming obscenities at our opponent, making them feel very unwanted in Kroger Field and creating an environment of excellence for Kentucky football,” Stein stated. “I mean, that’s what it’s about. You want to see a great product on the field. I want to see insane fans in the stands as well.”
