Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks made his return to the lineup after a two-week absence, causing disappointment among fans. On Monday, he was reinstated as the designated hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Marte expressed remorse for his unexplained absence and stated through a translator, “I’m going to ask for forgiveness. We’re human, we all commit mistakes.” He had left the team without permission on August 17 during their Boston visit, which initially led to a restricted list placement until knee inflammation was cited as the reason.
Marte’s decision to leave was his alone. “A moment of frustration,” he admitted, adding, “I failed [manager] Torey Lovullo by not showing up.” Despite his absence, previous incidents of missing games without team approval had been reported for four consecutive seasons.
Marte was spotted playing roulette at Talking Stick Casino in Scottsdale during the team’s games, an optics issue he disregarded. He stated, “Those are things that I do in my personal time,” indicating previous experiences with injury.
When asked for a message to fans, Marte remained silent and shook his head. His batting average stands at .249 with 21 home runs, vital for the Diamondbacks, who are 73-65 and seeking a Wild Card playoff spot. He is contracted with full no-trade protection through 2031, giving him significant leverage.
The Diamondbacks find themselves in need of Marte’s performance, yet accountability remains a challenging issue as long as he continues to contribute on the field.
