Knicks Set to Visit White House for NBA Championship Celebration
The New York Knicks will visit the White House to celebrate their recent NBA championship, confirmed an administration official. This occasion marks the first time an NBA championship team visits the White House during President Donald Trump’s administration.
Knicks owner James Dolan announced the team’s invitation during an interview on WFAN sports radio. Dolan expressed his eagerness to accept the invitation, stating, “We just did receive an invitation from the White House, which we accepted. We still have to figure out the details, etc., but yes, of course.” A White House official echoed the sentiment, affirming that discussions with the Knicks are ongoing to finalize a suitable date.
Dolan highlighted his longstanding friendship with Trump, even inviting him to Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on June 8. Trump attended the game, where he was met with a mixed reception, yet he watched alongside administration officials.
Trump, celebrating the Knicks’ victory on Truth Social, congratulated Dolan and key players like Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, and Mitchell Robinson. He expressed immense admiration for the team’s remarkable playoff performance, calling the final victories “maybe the greatest in the history of basketball.”
The Knicks’ visit to the White House is significant, as NBA teams have skipped the tradition for several years. The Golden State Warriors, led by Stephen Curry, initiated this trend in 2017 when Curry expressed disinterest in attending. Trump’s response via social media further stirred the controversy. Subsequent champions, such as the Toronto Raptors in 2019 and the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, also opted out due to varying circumstances, including the Covid-19 pandemic.
Conversely, President Joe Biden welcomed several teams during his tenure. Teams like the Milwaukee Bucks, the Warriors, and the Boston Celtics have all participated in White House visits to celebrate their achievements.
