Labor Unions Seek New Allies Amid Declining Influence

In recent years, the influence of organized labor has seen a significant decline. Despite this trend, unions are finding new support across the political spectrum, both from the Left and the Right. As 2026 unfolds, labor politics has become increasingly challenging.

Throughout the nation, multiple major private-sector union contracts are due to end this summer. Among these are agreements concerning 20,000 Verizon workers located in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, as well as 25,000 steelworkers in the Midwest.

Earlier this year, labor tensions were high as Stop & Shop approached the expiration of contracts with 28,000 food workers in New England. A strike was narrowly averted when they reached an agreement.
