Lake Forest College’s 107-acre campus has become bustling this fall, thanks to its largest-ever incoming class. The school now hosts 1,794 students, including 423 first-year students and 116 transfer students. In contrast, last fall’s entry included 394 freshmen and 89 transfers. College President Michael J. Sosulski emphasized, “Lake Forest College is not a best-kept secret any longer!” He attributes this growth to the college’s appealing location by Lake Michigan near Chicago, affordability, and successful post-graduate outcomes. Within six months, 97% of graduates either gain employment or attend graduate school.
Data from U.S. News & World Report reveals a four-year graduation rate of 70%. Alumni typically earn a median salary of $51,324 six years post-graduation. Sosulski said, “We know our students by name, enabling us to write some of the best recommendation letters.” The Princeton Review ranks Lake Forest 14th in career services and includes it among the “best value colleges.”
The school actively recruits transfer students, particularly from the College of Lake County and the College of DuPage. Sosulski explained that the college’s transfer-friendly policies facilitate credit transfer, enhancing its attractiveness. Named the 15th president last June, Sosulski was inaugurated on April 10. He noted, “If you get an associate’s degree from the College of DuPage or College of Lake County, your credits transfer seamlessly.”
Around 45% of Lake Forest students are from out of state, representing 44 states. Approximately 20% are international, covering 119 countries. Sosulski remarked on the vibrant classroom discussions fostered by this diverse student body. This diversity is seen in classes like The Grapes of Wrath, bringing perspectives from African, Asian, and Middle Eastern students to traditional Great Lakes state students.
Lake Forest’s Division III sports success, particularly in soccer and football, also assists in drawing students. Last fall, the Foresters played in Chandler, Arizona, where family members filled the stands, creating a home-game atmosphere. Women’s soccer teams have maintained an undefeated conference record for three years, finishing with a 21-1 overall record last season.
Lake Forest offers popular programs in economics, business, and finance, as well as new majors in neuroscience and artificial intelligence. These majors attract students to programs not typically present in liberal arts colleges. The health professions program expands career paths through affiliations with Rosalind Franklin University Medical School. Furthermore, the “In the Loop” summer internship program allows housing in downtown Chicago, adding to the appeal.
Sosulski emphasizes the college’s low 13-to-1 faculty-to-student ratio, allowing personalized interactions. “You’re not going to be anonymous here,” he stated. While Sosulski avoided predicting future record enrollments, he anticipates a continued rise in applications. “Enrollment has been positive, even during the pandemic, offering an elite education at an affordable price. The secret’s out.”
