The basketball season continues with an interesting matchup in the WNBA today, featuring the Las Vegas Aces and the Golden State Valkyries. The scheduling of games often raises questions, as some days see limited action, while others are packed. Despite this, any opportunity to watch basketball is welcome, along with an investment in the game through betting.
The Las Vegas Aces have established themselves as a powerhouse in the WNBA. A key factor in their success is A’ja Wilson, a consistent MVP and Defensive Player of the Year contender. The team’s strategy involves surrounding Wilson with a strong supporting cast. Last season, their slow start did not prevent them from securing their third championship in four years.
The current season began with a loss to the Mercury, their previous championship opponents. Following this, the Aces secured four consecutive victories before losing their next two games against the Sparks and the Dallas Wings. For the Aces, early-season games in May are not typically seen as crucial, as the team has the ability to escalate their performance when necessary.
The Golden State Valkyries made an impressive debut last season, drawing large crowds and setting attendance records. A strong start to this season has seen them achieve a 5-2 record, with victories over teams expected to reach the postseason like the Indiana Fever, Phoenix Mercury, and New York Liberty.
The Valkyries depend heavily on a trio of players: Veronica Burton, Gabby Williams, and Janelle Salaun, who together average 45 points per game. Salaun, a pivotal bench scorer, ensures a steady performance alongside the team’s reliable role players. The team aims to build on this foundation for further improvement.

Officiating in the WNBA has faced criticism, with referees often viewed less favorably compared to their NBA counterparts. Recently, Aces’ head coach Becky Hammon publicly criticized the referees, resulting in a fine. Such situations sometimes lead to ‘makeup’ calls in subsequent games. The Aces might benefit from favorable officiating in their upcoming game.
Despite this potential advantage, A’ja Wilson remains a formidable challenge for the Valkyries, a team without an adequate defensive counter. Wilson has averaged 23 points and 11 rebounds in previous encounters against them. Her offensive capabilities are expected to shine in the matchup, with predictions suggesting she will surpass a combined 33.5 points and rebounds.
