Las Vegas Raiders Face Tension with Taron Johnson Trade

The Las Vegas Raiders are approaching the 2026 season with a strong lineup. They have added two quarterbacks: Heisman Trophy recipient Fernando Mendoza and experienced player Kirk Cousins. New signings include linebackers Quay Walker and Nakobe Dean, edge rusher Kwity Paye, and standout center Tyler Linderbaum. Former Seattle Seahawks’ offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak has been appointed as the head coach, leading an offense led by Mendoza, Ashton Jeanty, and Brock Bowers.

The team also brought in Buffalo Bills nickelback Taron Johnson through a trade. Initially seen as a brilliant acquisition, the situation has become complex just three months in, potentially causing issues as training camp approaches.

While he is under contract through 2028, only $1.2 million of Johnson’s $8.1 million base salary this season is guaranteed, with no guarantees for 2027. McFadden suggests the Raiders might need to offer more guarantees in his contract to maintain harmony.

Johnson was drafted in the fourth round in 2018, from Weber State, and became a crucial player in Sean McDermott’s defense at Buffalo. Over his eight-year career with the Bills, he recorded 572 tackles, eight sacks, eight forced fumbles, six interceptions, and 48 pass breakups, consistently performing in critical moments. He’s regarded as a top NFL nickel cornerback, expected to bring the same level of play to the Raiders.

However, Johnson is turning 30 and desires job security after his trade. Las Vegas recently drafted Treydan Stukes, a versatile defensive back, in the 2026 NFL draft. Stukes, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound safety, achieved 52 tackles, 10 passes defensed, four interceptions, and one sack last year at Arizona, carrying attributes similar to what Johnson offers.

Johnson is likely to fill the nickelback role, yet his performance could significantly increase his value, potentially raising his future salary demands. Conversely, if the Raiders restructure his contract now, they risk committing funds to a player potentially past his prime. This situation presents a challenge, with tension likely growing as discussions are delayed, affecting the team’s cultural reset efforts.
