The superintendent of Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), Alberto Carvalho, has resigned following an FBI raid on his home and office earlier in the year. Carvalho, who led the second-largest school district in the U.S., announced his departure to avoid distractions affecting student learning.
“Placing students first has always guided my work,” Carvalho stated. “I believe our schools must remain focused on students and learning without distraction, so I am resigning as Superintendent of LAUSD effective today, June 21, 2026.”
His resignation comes amid an ongoing investigation linked to a failed multimillion-dollar AI school contract, raising potential conflict-of-interest concerns.

Carvalho’s tenure of four years began with his appointment in 2022, and his resignation ends his leadership at the district. He was reappointed by unanimous decision in the fall of 2025.
In his resignation letter, Carvalho noted “historic” achievements during his term, such as record-high graduation rates, improved academic performance beyond pre-pandemic levels, and what he characterized as “equitable” progress for disadvantaged students.
“As the School Board noted in its unanimous reappointment of me last year, our District’s executive leadership prioritized achievement and equity, placing our most vulnerable students at the heart of our agenda,” he said.
He expressed gratitude to students, families, teachers, leaders, staff, partners, and the community for their trust, dedication, and the privilege of serving. “The successes we have achieved belong to you. I will miss all of you and will continue to pray for the success, health, and well-being of every student and family in our District,” Carvalho added.
In response to Carvalho’s resignation, the LAUSD Board emphasized its commitment to maintaining public trust. “The Board remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring stability, continuity, and continued progress through strong leadership,” the district commented. “Our focus remains unchanged: providing every student with a high-quality education, supporting our dedicated workforce, and maintaining the trust of the communities we serve.” AndrĂ©s E. Chait will act as superintendent until a permanent decision is made.
FBI RAID INVOLVING LA SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT POSSIBLY TIED TO FAILED $6M AI DEAL, POTENTIAL CONFLICT
In February, investigators executed a search warrant at Carvalho’s home, with video showing agents carrying items in and out. Staff at LAUSD headquarters were evacuated as agents conducted a similar search. A home associated with a longtime colleague of Carvalho’s was also searched, as reported by local news citing FBI Miami.
The FBI investigation is reportedly connected to AllHere, a former startup contracted to create a student-facing chatbot. In 2023, Carvalho awarded a $6 million project contract to AllHere, which included $3 million upfront. The initiative fell apart in 2024 amid allegations against the company’s founder, Joanna Smith-Griffith, of embezzling funds and handling data improperly.
The deal with AllHere was reportedly facilitated by Debra Kerr, an edtech salesperson and a longtime associate of Carvalho. Kerr’s home in Miami was targeted during the broader searches related to LAUSD.
