Lawrence Wright’s ‘Redemption’ Explores Sisterhood on Death Row
Lawrence Wright, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, explores the unique relationship between Catholic nuns and women on Texas’ death row in his new book, Redemption: Faith, Justice, and Sisterhood on Death Row. The book sheds light on how these two seemingly different groups share more than expected.
Both the nuns and the inmates live in rooms referred to as cells and adhere to almost identical daily schedules. Wright explains that their similarities extend beyond routines, forming deep and unexpected connections. Seven women on Texas’ death row and the Sisters of Mary Morning Star, a Catholic order, play central roles in this narrative.
The Sisters of Mary Morning Star have an informal code of silence, speaking only during a communal meal on Sunday afternoons. Despite this, Wright managed to engage them in conversation. The nuns and inmates found ‘companion spirits’ in one another, learning to live in community through monastic traditions.
This experience led Wright to observe profound changes in the prisoners over time. His research also raised questions about the fairness of the Texas justice system. Wright shared his concerns that some women might not belong on death row. Even in cases of clear guilt, he found the concept of execution troubling.
Wright voiced his discomfort with keeping individuals incarcerated for decades, only to execute them when they have transformed. He argues such practices violate the principle of equal justice. This perspective highlights the broader issues within the justice system.
