President Donald Trump expressed his support for Irish reunification on Saturday, stating he would ‘love to see’ the unification of Ireland.
On Monday, Northern Irish First Minister Michelle O’Neill signed a joint declaration on the right to self-determination in Cardiff, Wales. Present at the signing were Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth, Scottish First Minister John Swinney, and Irish opposition leader Mary Lou McDonald.
The leaders of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland urged the British government to take steps to ‘prepare for, plan and facilitate’ their potential independence. This call for action comes shortly after Trump’s remarks on Irish reunification.
