LeBron James experienced a hostile reception from New York Knicks fans during the Philadelphia 76ers’ season opener. As James approached the free-throw line, fans chanted, “We don’t want you!” This reaction stemmed from Knicks fans’ disappointment, as James expressed a preference for joining the Knicks if they hadn’t won an NBA championship last season.
Despite the cold welcome, James had the final word. The 76ers secured a 106-100 victory over the Knicks, with James contributing 14 points and nine rebounds. The Sixers’ success was bolstered by other key players, including Tyrese Maxey, who scored 28 points, Jaylen Brown with 19 points, and Joel Embiid, who added 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Sixers effectively spoiled the Knicks’ championship celebration.
“It was a great night for New York fans. Fifty-plus years. I was a part of that at one point where we hadn’t won a major championship in Cleveland in over 50 years. The fans will never forget this moment,” James said.
James’ first basket for the Sixers was an uncomplicated layup, setting the stage for what the team hopes will be numerous achievements over the next two seasons. As the NBA’s career scoring leader, James embarks on his 24th season with Philadelphia. The Sixers’ coach, Nick Nurse, anticipates that James, alongside Embiid and Brown, will lead the team to a championship celebration similar to that of the Knicks.
The Philadelphia 76ers assembled a formidable lineup with hopes of winning their first title since 1983. The starting five includes James, Brown, Embiid, Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe. The team faces questions about role distribution, particularly regarding primary ball handling. This dynamic creates intrigue for fans and coaches alike as they observe the team’s chemistry.
During the game, James assisted Brown in scoring his first points with the Sixers. The team demonstrated strong cohesion throughout the match, ending the third quarter with an 11-0 run. Brown’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer secured an 83-76 lead.
James’ arrival in Philadelphia has energized the city. His jerseys sell rapidly, murals appear, and public events attract thousands. Even his teammates feel awestruck when meeting him. Compared to their last visit to Madison Square Garden, the Sixers have significantly transformed, adding talent and increasing their payroll to compete with the Knicks.
“It’s certainly been fun these first few weeks,” said coach Nick Nurse. “These guys have been really great.”
As James continues, his focus remains on winning a fifth championship ring. Philadelphia eagerly anticipates the outcome.
