Rescue efforts continue in Kharkiv, Ukraine, following a Russian airstrike on October 20, 2026. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Kyiv has started receiving timely alerts from allies about incoming Russian missiles. He emphasized the importance of these warnings in protecting civilians and enabling military interception efforts.
Zelenskyy has highlighted that, for a week, Ukraine lacked early alerts about ballistic missile threats aimed at the capital. After discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, he expressed gratitude for the restored intelligence sharing, which he believes is crucial for civilian safety.
“We are thankful that intelligence works now, and I’m speaking about early warning, which is very important for our people, for children, adults, civilians, because we can hear when ballistic is coming,” Zelenskyy said.
Meanwhile, another missile and drone attack by Russia resulted in the deaths of at least nine individuals in Ukraine. Zelenskyy called for increased support from the United States and Europe during his visit to Norway, where he met with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff. Witkoff aims to broker peace talks, but so far has been unsuccessful.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb mentioned that the discussions marked a positive step towards peace. Witkoff plans to visit St. Petersburg to discuss proposals with Russian leadership.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed willingness to consider new U.S. proposals but was skeptical of any major changes from Washington. President Donald Trump urged Zelenskyy to reach an agreement with Russia, noting the significant support provided by the U.S. to Ukraine.
Zelenskyy communicated concerns to U.S. lawmakers about perceived political decisions slowing down support for Ukraine. He highlighted the need for American-made Patriot air-defense interceptors and criticized delays in missile delivery. Restrictions on the use of SpaceX’s Starshield service by Ukraine have also impacted military operations.
Rubio, speaking from India, denied a reduction in U.S. support or deliberate harm to Ukraine. He acknowledged that Patriot missiles are in high demand globally, not just in Ukraine.
European nations are attempting to compensate for any decrease in U.S. supplies, with substantial financial allocations for Ukraine’s defense. Despite President Trump easing sanctions on Russia, Zelenskyy criticized this move as beneficial for Russian aggression.
Recent Russian attacks led to casualties and damage across 12 Ukrainian regions, as reported by the National Police. Significant losses occurred in Kyiv, Obukhiv, and Bucha districts, affecting civilians and infrastructure.
The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed strikes on Ukrainian logistics centers and infrastructure, while also intercepting Ukrainian drones over Russian regions.
