Legal Dispute Over Kennedy Center Renovations
The Department of Justice (DOJ) lawyers issued a 21-page court filing asserting that the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, opened in September 1971, risks destruction if not extensively renovated as sought by President Trump. DOJ attorney Brantley T. Mayers described the center as “dangerously dilapidated” and in dire need of remodeling. Mayers criticized the building’s condition as structurally unsafe and an embarrassment to the capital.
Democratic U.S. Representative Joyce Beatty is challenging the Trump-appointed board’s efforts to rename and close the center for renovations. Beatty argued that renaming the center to include ‘Trump’ requires congressional approval. Last Thursday, she requested a federal court block efforts to name the grounds “President Donald J. Trump Plaza.”
During a congressional hearing, Beatty defended her challenge as important for upholding the rule of law and preserving the Kennedy Center’s legacy. She accused Trump-appointed trustees of stripping voting rights from ex officio members and changing the center’s name from President John F. Kennedy, a Democratic icon.
Beatty emphasized the significance of protecting the memorial and resisting actions that rewrite history, seize public institutions, and suppress dissent.
Mayers warned that donor funding would decline if Trump is not credited for modernization efforts, jeopardizing structural rehabilitation. He stressed Trump’s qualifications, given his real estate expertise, and cautioned against the center’s further decay.
A proposal for a new outdoor amphitheater by the Potomac River has emerged as a potential replacement. While more economical, such a venue would not honor President Kennedy adequately, per Mayers.
The bottom line is this: Even Beatty should prefer a healthy, restored Center to a decaying hulk that is doomed to inevitable destruction or collapse.
