On Thursday, water began to refill the recently renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. President Donald Trump confirmed this development from the Oval Office, sharing a video depicting water bubbling in the freshly painted basin. He commented it was “clean, beautiful water.” The project, which involves covering the pool in a blue protective coating, continues ahead of the United States’ 250th anniversary, set for June 4, 2026, in Washington.
A live video showcased water accumulating as workers and trucks remained within the pool. Trump mentioned the basin was painted in a deep shade referred to as “American flag blue,” which was completed on Wednesday. The administration indicated in a court filing that the pool would be fully filled by Sunday.
Trump also revealed plans to construct a “promenade,” enabling pedestrian access from the back of the Lincoln Memorial to the Potomac River. He remarked, “They want to call it the ‘Trump Promenade’ but I don’t know if I want to do that, but it’s going to be beautiful.” The renovation cost estimates range from $1.5 million to $2 million, though records indicate $14.8 million in contracts have been secured.
The project offers Trump another opportunity to leave his mark on Washington. This follows previous initiatives like the demolition of the White House East Wing for a new ballroom, and a proposal for an arch between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
The reflecting pool, measuring over 2,000 feet long, was originally constructed in the 1920s between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. It is a historic site where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered the “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963. Before a 2012 renovation, the pool held approximately 6.5 million gallons of water, equal to 10 Olympic-size swimming pools. That renovation included adding a circulation and filtration system, allowing it to use river water from the nearby Tidal Basin instead of the city’s drinking water.
The renovation occurs amidst drought conditions affecting Washington and neighboring states. Critics argue Trump focuses excessively on personal projects rather than pressing voter concerns, like living costs, with upcoming elections. Some suggest he aims to make the reflecting pool resemble a swimming pool.
In a recent legal development, a Washington-based nonprofit, the Cultural Landscape Foundation, filed a lawsuit to stop the “dark grey” pool work. They claim the new paint color gives a “theme park” appearance. Despite the ongoing legal case, the Trump administration informed the court that work concluded, with the basin expected to be filled by Sunday.
