Lincoln-Way West Secures Victory in State Semifinal Against Marist
PEORIA — Lincoln-Way West’s senior pitcher Abby Brueggmann displayed raw emotions as she celebrated a significant victory for her team. The triumph was an affirmation of her skills, as she expressed her initial doubts about her capabilities in high-stakes games. Brueggmann said, “Sometimes, I thought I wasn’t good enough to pitch in these kinds of games. It’s reassuring to make it here and know our team’s strength. And I’m strong enough.”
Brueggmann’s performance on Friday led the Warriors to a 2-1 win over Marist in the Class 4A state semifinal at Louisville Slugger Sports Complex in Peoria. Committing to St. Xavier, she struck out four and left eight players on base, elevating Lincoln-Way West (29-7). Contributions from other team members, like St. Ambrose recruit Reese Forsythe with a crucial triple and NC State commit Reese Rourke who stole home, were pivotal.
Lincoln-Way West’s advancement to play Mundelein (23-5) for the state title is highly anticipated. Abby Brueggmann said, “This is fantastic. Our team comprises great leaders, especially the seniors. We defeated the best team, and now we aim to win the championship.” Earlier in the season, Marist overpowered the Warriors 11-5, casting themselves as favorites for this encounter.
Their mentality heading into the rematch was characterized by playing with freedom and assertiveness, embracing a challenging yet motivating environment. Brueggmann noted, “Our strategy was to play loose and aggressive as we had nothing to lose. The pressure seemed to build on Marist with every inning we claimed.”
Marist managed runners in scoring positions but didn’t capitalize. Their lone score came from a double by Ellie Holmstrom and a squeeze bunt RBI by Alia Rowles. Lincoln-Way West scored first with a double steal by Rourke and Paige Seivert. The second score was attributed to Forsythe’s triple followed by a drive from Seivert.
“Brueggmann managed situations expertly when faced with bases loaded. Her ability to end innings under duress was commendable, contributing significantly to Lincoln-Way West’s defensive prowess,” said coach Heather Novak.
Brueggmann’s strategic choices in pitching reflected her growth and confidence, with critical strikeouts in both the fifth and seventh innings. Forsythe, her catcher, acknowledged the bond they share, praising Brueggmann’s determination and trust in the team’s defense. She said, “Catching for Abby is an honor. We connect well, and I assure her of the team’s defensive support which boosts her performance.”
Coach Heather Novak highlighted Brueggmann’s resilience, especially against tough competitors like Marist. She trusts her prowess and appreciates her teammates, demonstrating remarkable growth and tenacity. Novak remarked, “Handling challenging lineups boosts her confidence. Her development during these four years is outstanding, culminating in a poised performance during pivotal games.”
The postseason exhibited Lincoln-Way West’s ability to thrive under pressure with smart pitching and reliable defensive tactics. These attributes have proven instrumental in their journey to state finals, underscoring the team’s cohesive effort.
