Little Debbie’s Oatmeal Creme Pie: A Lasting Legacy
What began as a modest 5-cent snack during the Great Depression has evolved into a popular treat over the decades. Little Debbie’s Oatmeal Creme Pie, introduced by O.D. McKee in 1935, has become one of their best-selling items. McKee first sold baked goods from the back of his 1928 Whippet. By 1934, the McKee family had purchased a bakery near Chattanooga, Tennessee, using their car as collateral.
Their living quarters were in the bakery itself. The Oatmeal Creme Pie was the first snack under the Little Debbie brand. Little Debbie, named after McKee’s granddaughter, became an established brand by the 1960s. These pies were introduced as the first snack in their lineup, highlighting whole grain oats, molasses, and delicious crème filling.
Originally selling for 49 cents a carton in 1960, the Oatmeal Creme Pie was joined by 14 other snack varieties by 1964. This included the popular Nutty Buddy bars and Swiss Cake Rolls. Today, Little Debbie continues to expand their Oatmeal Creme Pie line with new versions, such as ice cream sandwiches and bars, while home bakers create many copycat recipes.
Based in Tennessee, McKee Foods claims the title of “America’s largest family bakery.” The company produces over 75 Little Debbie products, selling more than 200 million cartons of their top items annually. The Oatmeal Creme Pie, Swiss Rolls, and Nutty Buddy bars remain top sellers.
Still family-run, Little Debbie involves the fourth generation of the McKee family. Debbie McKee-Fowler chairs the McKee Foods Board of Directors. The company prides itself on creating beloved products. As stated in a company message, their success is tied to delivering products that people love. Oatmeal Creme Pies have been part of family gatherings and shared moments for over 60 years, appealing to a wide range of demographics with their spiced cookie flavor and sweet crème filling.
A customer shared a story illustrating the nostalgic value of Oatmeal Creme Pies. Each time the customer went fishing with his grandfather, he enjoyed one of these treats, forming cherished memories. Today, the snack evokes those fond moments, showcasing how Little Debbie products become more than just snacks.
