The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) announced in April that funding for LIV Golf would cease after the 2026 season. This led to speculation that the circuit might not survive past this year. However, LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil put these rumors to rest on Wednesday, confirming that an investor has been secured to maintain the league’s operations.
Speaking ahead of LIV’s New York tournament at Trump National Bedminster, O’Neil revealed that an agreement with a lead investor has been finalized and approved by the Board. While details about the investor remain undisclosed, O’Neil emphasized that the upcoming era of LIV Golf will prioritize the players. He stated, LIV Golf has an agreement in place with a lead investor, signed by the investor and approved by the Board, to anchor the transaction and play a key role in supporting the path forward for the League’s next era, driven by and for the players.
Significantly, the next chapter of the league will allow players to hold a majority of the equity, marking a first for a major global sports league. O’Neil mentioned that the goal is to finalize this transaction by September. Despite these plans, specifics about the league’s format and participant roster for 2027 remain uncertain.
The 2027 schedule intends to feature 10 events, with half hosted in the United States and the rest internationally. Yet, ongoing uncertainties continue to surround the future of certain events. The LIV Team Championship, slated for late August, has been rumored to face cancellation. Reports indicated issues with contracts and logistics might jeopardize the event.
Additionally, LIV golfer Martin Kaymer commented that the team championship appearing to be “highly unlikely” to proceed. Despite these challenges, discussions with prospective investors have been promising, with efforts underway to ensure long-term sustainability for LIV Golf. According to statements made on Wednesday, these conversations were indeed fruitful, further securing the league’s future.
