In a talented Mount Carmel team filled with top prospects, Logan Fernandez might not always stand out at first glance. Yet, this senior outfielder is making his mark as a Triton commit. Despite not having the most imposing physical presence compared to his teammates, he consistently excels as the team’s No. 3 hitter. Fernandez has always been underestimated, something he has experienced all his life.
I’m just a kid from the city. I’ve always been surrounded by kids who have a little more of a spotlight than me. I never let that faze me. I just go out there and play ball.
Fernandez has been a vital player for Mount Carmel, which boasts a 30-10 record. The team is preparing to face off against Libertyville, who hold a 29-10-1 record, in a Class 4A state semifinal at Slammers Stadium in Joliet this Friday.
With a batting average of .385, 39 RBIs, and 33 runs, Fernandez ranks high among his teammates. He has also cracked seven doubles and two home runs this season.
I’m just keeping it simple. It’s about sticking with what works and trying not to overthink things. I feel like people get caught up in their own heads and I just try to play in dummy mode, not thinking about it.
A recent game highlighted what happens when opponents underestimate Fernandez. During a close matchup against Sandburg, an intentional walk left Fernandez up to bat. He responded with a crucial two-run double, setting Mount Carmel ahead.
I took that as disrespect. I didn’t like it. It’s kind of hard to intentionally walk anybody on our team because from one through nine, we’re all hitters.
Mount Carmel’s coach Brian Hurry expresses confidence in Fernandez’s abilities.
Logan has been a great hitter for us. He’s steady and consistent and has come through for us so many times.
Fernandez began high school at Jones before transferring to Mount Carmel. He adapted quickly and found his place within the team.
I played travel ball with some of the Mount Carmel guys and I knew how good of a team they had. Now, it feels like I’ve been here the whole time.
This experienced group of seniors, including Fernandez, aims to make a mark by bringing the Mount Carmel program back to state prominence for the first time since 2015. Having reached this stage after tough competition, their dedication is clear. Fernandez feels a strong connection to his team.
I love this team and all these guys. It means everything to get to state with them. We know how good of a team we have and we just need to keep doing what we’ve been doing.
