The Los Angeles Chargers are currently facing significant challenges, with no wins in the first three weeks of the NFL season. Their early performance has raised concerns, especially with double-digit losses to the Cardinals and Raiders, teams that together secured only six wins last year.
Latest Defeat’s Impact
The Chargers’ recent defeat against the Bills highlighted ongoing issues. Despite forcing five turnovers, a typical recipe for victory, they lost 24-16. The team led 13-10 in the fourth quarter, but the offense faltered. Quarterback Justin Herbert struggled to convert drives to touchdowns, opting instead for field goals, allowing the Bills to claw back. Josh Allen, although not impressive for much of the game, led two decisive scoring drives in the final quarter.
Herbert’s Performance Under Scrutiny
Head Coach Jim Harbaugh did not mince words about Justin Herbert’s performance, emphasizing the need for better decision-making. “Be better. Be better,” he remarked, stressing the necessity for improvement from Herbert, the coaching staff, and himself.
“And that drives Justin, that drives me, that drives his position coach, that drives Mike [McDaniel], the coordinator,” Harbaugh added.
Selected as the sixth overall pick in 2020 from Oregon, Herbert hit the ground running. He earned Offensive Rookie of the Year and shone in his second season with 5,014 passing yards, the second highest in the NFL, and 38 touchdowns. Despite these achievements, his performance has not reached the same heights, and he has not advanced beyond the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
Current Season Overview
This season has been particularly challenging for Herbert. He has passed for 627 yards and three touchdowns and thrown four interceptions in three games, with a 59.1% completion rate, his career’s lowest. The Chargers have yet to secure a win, intensifying questions about Herbert’s potential to lead the team to victory.
Upcoming Challenges
The Chargers face a demanding schedule, with games against the Seahawks, Broncos, Chiefs, Rams, Texans, and Ravens on the horizon. The pressure is on for Herbert and the Chargers to reverse their fortunes.
