A luxury cruise ship braved challenging Pacific Ocean conditions to rescue an injured sailor stranded on a disabled vessel, according to reports. This event occurred on May 26 as the cruise ship made its way to Vancouver.
The Silver Whisper, a ship operated by Silversea Cruises under the Royal Caribbean Group, was in the midst of a 24-night journey from Papeete, Tahiti, when it received an alert about the injured sailor. Due to the distance from Hawaii and the continental United States, conducting an air rescue was not feasible, prompting the Silver Whisper to alter its route.
Passengers on board the Silver Whisper shared their experiences on social media. One described the challenging conditions faced by the ship as it diverted its course to assist the injured sailor.
“The Silver Whisper rescued a man whose vessel lost all power and communications amid high winds and rough seas,” recounted a passenger on Facebook.
The rescue mission involved a seven-hour effort to reach the injured sailor without precise coordinates. The Facebook user noted, “It was like finding a needle in a haystack. I’m happy to report that the sailor was found alive with a broken shoulder but is doing well.”
Many passengers acknowledged potential delays in their travel plans due to the ship’s diversion. Another passenger offered insights into the incident, stating, “A May Day call was received by the Coast Guard, and our ship was directed to perform the rescue. Despite the possible missed flights, we saved a life.”
The rescue involved navigating rough seas, as the stabilizers had to be retracted, according to another social media account. Passengers were asked to remain in their cabins during this process. The passenger described it as “quite an experience.”
The Silver Whisper, noted for its advanced features, is described on Silversea’s website as offering luxurious amenities such as an expanded wellness spa, chic boutiques, and entertainment in a multi-tiered show lounge.
Fox News Digital has reached out to Royal Caribbean for further comments on the incident.
