Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner faces criticism over past actions, including allegations from ex-girlfriends and a tattoo associated with controversy. Opinions among Maine voters differ as Platner gets ready for the primary against GOP Sen. Susan Collins. Notably, Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna supports Platner.
Bill Maher, known for hosting HBO’s ‘Real Time,’ endorsed Platner, despite acknowledging some of his unsettling positions and actions. Maher urged Maine residents to support Platner for two reasons. First, the need for balance in government, which a Democratic Senate might help achieve. Second, to accept the nature of American democracy, acknowledging that voters often see their reflection in their representatives. He highlighted that Platner’s solution to a home invasion was concerning, along with his controversial tattoo resembling the Nazi ‘Totenkopf.’
One ex-girlfriend, Lyndsey Fifield, spoke out about Platner’s troubling statements on home invasion, illustrating a pattern of behavior she found disturbing. His past remarks on sexual abuse, race, and behavior deemed threatening have brought him under scrutiny. In addition to this, old posts about extreme views and behavior have resurfaced during his campaign. The tattoo and other behaviors indicate a history that complicates his Senate run.
Despite these controversies, Maher emphasized Platner’s military service, mentioning his Marine background. He suggested Platner’s life story mirrored a movie plot more than a political career. Maher humorously proposed he needed a break rather than a Senate term. There was no immediate response from Platner to these observations.
Maher also criticized President Donald Trump’s communication tendencies, noting a trend among some politicians. He pointed out that not all thoughts should be vocalized, likening the lack of filtering to flinging thoughts recklessly. The evolving political climate has created room for such expressions, which Maher seems to find problematic.
