Malachi Toney delivered a remarkable performance for the Miami Hurricanes in their matchup against Pittsburgh. The sophomore wide receiver played a crucial role in Miami’s overwhelming 52-23 victory. His efforts at Hard Rock Stadium etched his name alongside some of college football’s prominent figures.
Toney secured 16 receptions, amassing 194 yards and three touchdowns. His reception tally set a new record for a single game at Miami. This feat continued his exceptional run this season.
“Malachi Toney went for 194 yards with 3 TD in Miami’s win over Pitt today. It was his 5th career multi-TD game,” reported ESPN Insights.
Toney’s achievement placed him in elite company. A graphic highlighted his feat, pairing him with Calvin Johnson and Torry Holt. They are the only players in the past three decades of ACC play to record at least 150 receiving yards and two touchdowns in a single game. Johnson shone in 2006 with Georgia Tech, while Holt was impressive in 1998 with NC State.
Toney made an early impact, scoring a 19-yard touchdown in the opening quarter. In the second, he broke away for a 53-yard touchdown. He added an 11-yard score in the fourth, concluding his impressive day.
Quarterback Darian Mensah also excelled, completing 31 out of 37 passes for 387 yards and four touchdowns. His partnership with Toney was a challenge Pittsburgh struggled to overcome.
This victory held significant weight, being Miami’s first as the top-ranked team nationally in nearly 24 years. Their dominant display solidified Miami’s stance in the national title race.
Toney’s current form signals his emergence as a formidable receiver. If his performance remains consistent, Miami’s offense will pose a significant threat to future opponents.
