Mario Hezonja Returns to NBA After Six-Year European Stint

Former NBA player Mario Hezonja, known for his initial performance as the fifth overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic, has made a return to the league. Hezonja, now 31, was signed by the Cleveland Cavaliers on a one-year, $2.8 million veteran minimum deal. This marks his comeback to the NBA after spending several years playing overseas.

Hezonja’s NBA career began with high expectations. During his five seasons with the Orlando Magic, New York Knicks, and Portland Trail Blazers, he averaged 6.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists across 330 games. However, his performance did not meet the expectations placed upon him, and eventually, the league moved on.

Rather than fade as a draft disappointment, Hezonja opted to rebuild his career in Europe. Playing for Real Madrid, he became one of the continent’s top wings, winning a EuroLeague title and earning Liga Endesa MVP honors. These achievements have positioned him among Europe’s elite players.

Now, Hezonja has another opportunity in the NBA with the Cavaliers. The team sees this as a low-risk move with potential upside. Cleveland acquires a 6-foot-8 wing who has competed at a high level outside the NBA for several years. If he struggles with the transition, the financial impact on the team is minimal. However, if Hezonja’s European success translates to NBA performance, the Cavaliers may have secured a significant offseason bargain.

While Cleveland missed out on LeBron James, the signing of Mario Hezonja could turn out to be a valuable addition.
