Maryland Legislators to Focus on Redistricting if Special Session Called
During the recent legislative session, concerns arose over the U.S. Supreme Court’s indications of moving forward with plans to weaken the Voting Rights Act safeguards. This particularly impacts states with a history of suppressing voting power among Black citizens.
Despite these warnings, the Maryland Senate did not take action on reforms proposed by the House that would have made congressional redistricting feasible. This lack of movement occurred even with mounting worries about potential alterations to voting rights.
If a special session is convened, legislators will likely concentrate their efforts on redistricting. This focus highlights the importance of fair representation and the significance of voting structures that accommodate all citizens equally.
