Maryland Legislature Plans Special Session for Redistricting Amendment
The Maryland legislature will convene a special session next month following the proposal of a constitutional amendment on redistricting by Democratic lawmakers. This move is a response to recent Republican-led gerrymandering across the Southern United States.
Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson has been a key figure in these discussions. Although it’s too late to alter district lines for the upcoming midterm elections, the proposal signifies efforts to challenge districts that favor Republican interests.
This initiative comes after the Supreme Court’s decision that weakened the Voting Rights Act, resulting in some Republican-leaning districts being created from Black-majority areas. The special session aims to address these changes and consider future electoral maps that reflect Maryland’s diverse population.
