US Revokes Sanctions Waivers for Iranian Oil

The Trump administration has taken a significant step by revoking the sanctions waiver that previously allowed the sale of Iranian oil and petrochemicals. This decision follows reports of Iran striking three ships near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. This waterway is crucial for global oil shipping.

The Treasury Department has announced a deadline for winding down transactions previously authorized under the sanctions waiver. These transactions must be concluded by July 17. Originally, the waiver would have permitted Iranian oil sales until August 21.

This waiver was part of a ceasefire memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the United States and Iran after a prolonged period of conflict. A U.S. official explained that the MOU is based on Iran’s performance and that only demonstrated good behavior would allow Iran to benefit from its provisions. Tehran’s recent actions are seen as unacceptable, leading to the reimposition of sanctions, although negotiations for a final agreement are ongoing.

“Iran’s actions were unacceptable, and the consequence is the reimposition of sanctions,” said a U.S. official.

The U.S. military, in response to the attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, has started a series of significant strikes against Iranian targets. This news was announced by the U.S. Central Command (Centcom) on social media.
