Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller has countered President Donald Trump’s request for a Justice Department investigation into a recent mail-in ballot error in the state. Trump suggested the error pointed to corruption, but Miller rejected this, noting that election mistakes are common.
Trump urged the DOJ to investigate after some Maryland voters received incorrect mail-in ballots ahead of the primary elections. This occurred following an admission of error by the state’s election board. Trump accused Democratic Governor Wes Moore of corrupt involvement, claiming Moore interfered to guarantee a Democratic win.
The Maryland State Board of Elections disclosed they were informed of an error caused by their mail-in ballot vendor, Taylor Print & Visual Impressions (TPVI), Inc.
“This was done by the Corrupt Governor of the State, Wes Moore,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on May 18. “He allowed this to happen to make sure that Democrats win.”
Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller clarified to Fox News Digital that the Board of Elections operates independently from the governor’s administration, describing such ballot-distribution errors as recurring in election processes. She pointed out that while election administration errors have occurred, there isn’t evidence that incorrect ballots are an every-election issue.
The state elections board plans to send new ballots to voters who had received incorrect ones before May 14, ensuring safeguards to prevent duplicate voting. Trump raised concerns about possible duplicate voting, questioning the resolution of the issue.
Trump wrote on Truth Social, “In Maryland, they sent out 500,000 Illegal Mail In Ballots, and they got caught! So now, they’re going to send out 500,000 more Mail In Ballots, but nobody knows what’s happening with the first 500,000 they sent.” He also expressed concern that many ballots went to Democrats, affecting Republican chances in Maryland.
Miller denied suggestions of intentional wrongdoing, attributing the mistake to vendor error rather than malice. State Administrator of Elections Jared DeMarinis also refuted Trump’s claims of illegal ballots being distributed.
Trump asked Attorney General Todd Blanche and the Justice Department to investigate, though the DOJ has not publicly announced an investigation. Miller stated she has not received any details about a DOJ investigation and expressed intent to wait for its outcome.
