Maryland School Employee Faces New Charges in Voyeurism Case

Authorities have announced new criminal charges against a Maryland high school employee in a case involving unauthorized recordings of female students. James Mulhern III, from Walter Johnson High School in Montgomery County, is now charged with 12 counts of minor abuse following the discovery of eight more victims during an expanded investigation.

The investigation began on April 7 when students at the school found a video camera in the theater’s control booth. Upon checking the camera’s memory card, it contained recordings from the girls’ changing room. The students reported these findings to the school administration.

Police reports state the footage showed an adult male placing the camera in the room. The school’s principal identified this person as Mulhern, who worked as a media services technician. Police executed search warrants at the high school and Mulhern’s home in Clarksburg, recovering evidence, including electronic devices. Videos dating back to 2015 were found, leading to the identification of additional victims beyond the initial four found in April.

Mulhern appeared in court to face the new charges. He was released on a $100,000 unsecured personal bond. Conditions of the bond include staying away from the school, avoiding contact with minors, and only having supervised contact with his 4-year-old son.

Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy emphasized that the newly found evidence has increased concerns about the case. Each charge of abusing a minor in Maryland comes with a potential penalty of 25 years in prison. Therefore, if convicted of all 12 charges, Mulhern might face up to 300 years in prison.
