Teen Identified in 48-Year-Old California Murder Case
A teenage girl, whose body was discovered buried in a shallow grave under a California vineyard nearly fifty years ago, has been identified. This breakthrough revives a murder mystery that remained unsolved for 48 years. Michelle Louise Collier was only 15 when she vanished from Fresno in February 1978. Four months later, a tractor operator in a vineyard near Arvin found her skeletal remains. For decades, she was known solely as ‘Arvin Jane Doe.’
Michelle’s older sister, Cynthia Dunbar, expressed the family’s long wait for answers. “She disappeared 48 years ago, and only recently did we discover her whereabouts,” Dunbar stated at a recent news conference. Despite the tragedy, she shared that the family now has some peace.
The remains were uncovered on June 21, 1978, near South Wheeler Ridge Road. An autopsy confirmed the death as a homicide, but the exact cause was unclear. Without knowing who she was, investigators faced a dead-end. For decades, various detectives revisited the case, striving for a resolution.
In November 1978, her remains were interred at Arvin Cemetery after failing to be identified through the available forensic methods of the time. Advances in forensic science led to reopening of the case multiple times over the following years.
A breakthrough came in 2025 through the use of forensic investigative genetic genealogy. This combines DNA analysis with genealogical research. Collaborating with Texas-based laboratory Othram, investigators created a DNA profile from Collier’s remains, identifying potential relatives. This was the 86th case in California confirmed using this technology. A DNA swab from her mother confirmed Michelle’s identity.
Once identified, Collier’s remains were exhumed in April 2026 and returned to her family for a proper burial. “You didn’t deserve to die this way, Shelley,” Dunbar said, using a family name for Michelle. “We love you, Shelley.”
This development marks an important chapter in the case, but many questions about her death remain. No suspect information is available yet, but the identity gives investigators a new perspective.
