Large-scale protests erupted across Spain in response to the government’s handling of a significant surge of migrants into the country in July. In Madrid alone, authorities reported that 50,000 protesters demonstrated, expressing anger at Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez over the ongoing migrant situation in Ceuta, a Spanish city in North Africa.
Following the protests, violence persisted for several hours with reports of gunshots and explosions continuing throughout the night. Protesters carried signs with slogans such as, “A united Ceuta will never be defeated,” “Sánchez to prison,” and “Invaders — go home!”
What happened to us was not a migratory crisis. What happened was the violation of Spain’s territorial integrity.
This statement was made by Juan Jesús Vivas, the regional leader of Ceuta, as the city deals with the aftermath of over 70,000 migrants entering from Morocco in late July.
Recently, residents of Ceuta dismantled and burned temporary migrant camps. Demonstrators carried Spanish flags as they approached beachside camps, destroying shelters and lighting fires. Spanish law enforcement attempted to separate protesters and migrants during these events.
Prime Minister Sánchez has attributed the crisis to disinformation campaigns allegedly amplified by Russian and Israeli networks on social media. According to research from the European Union’s diplomatic service, these networks were said to have spread misinformation alongside far-right groups.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova dismissed these accusations, challenging Sánchez to provide evidence. Similarly, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar accused Sánchez of deflecting from domestic policy issues and called his statements “shameless lies.”
The situation continues to evolve as Spain grapples with the ongoing migrant crisis and domestic dissent.
