Massachusetts Mother’s Trial Explores Complex Postpartum Psychosis

Jury selection began Monday for the trial of Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children while experiencing severe psychiatric problems. Clancy’s case sheds light on postpartum psychosis, a rare and challenging condition affecting some women after childbirth.

The Case of Lindsay Clancy

Lindsay Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, is facing murder charges for the deaths of her children: Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months. The crime took place on January 24, 2023. Clancy’s lawyers plan to present an insanity defense, stating she was not in control of her actions due to postpartum psychosis, despite not disputing the commission of the deaths.

“This whole case is an extreme tragedy,” said defense attorney Kevin Reddington.

Prosecutors argue the acts were premeditated and intentional. Clancy has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Tragic Day

On the day of the incident, Clancy asked her husband, Patrick, to leave their home for errands. During his absence, she strangled the children and attempted suicide, which resulted in paralysis from a fall. She is currently held at a state hospital. Patrick Clancy, who has forgiven his wife, is listed as a witness for both sides in the trial.

Eighteen jurors, including six alternates, will be selected for the trial held in Plymouth, near their Duxbury home.

Lawsuit Against Healthcare Providers

Earlier this year, Lindsay and Patrick Clancy filed lawsuits against her healthcare providers. They claim she was not properly diagnosed or treated for her postpartum condition. Her history includes a psychiatric hospital stay weeks before the tragedy, and her lawsuit details her struggles, including depression, insomnia, and auditory hallucinations urging harm.

According to Patrick Clancy’s lawsuit, Lindsay heard voices saying, “This is your last chance. Kill the children so you can kill yourself,” and other distressing messages.

A Grief-Stricken Husband’s Plea

In a plea for public empathy, Patrick Clancy described his wife as loving and caring prior to the tragedy. He posted on GoFundMe, expressing his enduring love and hoping she finds peace.

“The real Lindsay was generously loving and caring toward everyone — me, our kids, family, friends, and her patients,” he wrote.
