Matthew McConaughey’s Meeting with Pope Leo XIV Sparks Political Ambitions
Matthew McConaughey recently met with Pope Leo XIV in Italy, stirring political ambitions for the actor. In an interview with USA Today, McConaughey discussed their conversation and revealed if it influenced his thoughts on entering politics.
Known for his centrist stance, McConaughey previously considered running for Texas governor in 2021. He has also actively supported bipartisan gun-safety measures following the 2022 Uvalde school shooting. Earlier this month, McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves, greeted Pope Leo XIV during a weekly audience at St. Peter’s Basilica.
McConaughey shared his views on religion’s role in life, stating, “Life is essentially a religious experience. Religious texts offer valuable lessons on how to live, treat others, and ourselves. Despite agreeing with the separation of church and state, I believe religious values should influence political systems.”
He suggested the creation of a new constitution that resonates with all religions, highlighting commonalities and the need for shared values. “There’s still a constitution out there to be written that all religions could agree on,” he noted.
“That would be a great thing to share.”
Reflecting on his discussion with Pope Leo XIV, McConaughey mentioned not preparing extensively beforehand, equating it to crafting a speech for an award not yet won. He wanted to explore the role of religion in modern society and the resurgence of interest among youth seeking structure.
In the gathering, the actor also raised concerns about artificial intelligence (AI). He expressed anticipation for its potential but emphasized the need for caution. “What are the standards going to be with AI?” McConaughey inquired. He emphasized the importance of controlling AI development to avoid becoming its subjects.
“We’re going to have to be the users of that tool and not let it tool us,”
he stated, underscoring the need for cautious advancement with the technology.
