Research highlights that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, and olive oil can support mental strength in older age. A study focused on older adults in England, during the COVID-19 pandemic, found those adhering to a Mediterranean diet reported greater psychological well-being than those who did not.
Study Overview
The researchers followed over 3,000 adults aged 50 to 90, analyzing the relationship between their dietary habits and long-term life outlook. Participants completed surveys measuring aspects like autonomy, life satisfaction, and control over routines. Each received a score reflecting adherence to a Mediterranean diet.
Findings indicated a significant link between closely following this diet and enhanced well-being.
Impact of Food Choices
The increase in psychological well-being did not stem from calorie intake. Instead, the types of foods consumed were deemed crucial. Adjustments for income, education, physical activity, and health indicators were made, but the positive correlation remained.
During COVID-19 lockdowns, overall happiness decreased, yet the decline was less pronounced for those on the Mediterranean diet. The anti-inflammatory properties of this diet, including antioxidants in extra virgin olive oil, were highlighted as beneficial.
Nutritional Benefits
Experts suggest the Mediterranean diet’s nutrients lower brain inflammation and enhance gut health, influencing hormone production related to mood. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish and polyphenols contribute to this effect.
Kim Kulp, a nutritionist, highlighted how varied plant foods inherent in the diet provide essential nutrients for both body and brain, supporting well-being.
Study Limitations
Researchers acknowledged limitations, notably the reliance on self-reported dietary surveys. Participants, generally healthier and wealthier, might not represent broader populations. The study’s observational nature also restricts proving direct causality between the diet and mental health improvements.
Eating a well-rounded diet with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes is suggested to enhance overall health and reduce stress and depression in older adults.
