Megan Rapinoe Criticizes Restrictions on Transgender Athletes

Former U.S. Women’s National Team soccer star Megan Rapinoe voiced strong opinions against efforts to bar transgender athletes from women’s sports. Speaking on ‘The View’, Rapinoe argued that these efforts are not truly focused on fairness in sports but are part of a wider campaign against women’s empowerment.

Rapinoe questioned the framing of the issue as a safety concern, stating, “They’re going after trans people in sports, and they’re using this as a wedge issue because we love sports. And, you know, we don’t want our little girls to be unsafe in sports. And it’s like, ‘Unsafe from who? But okay.’”

Recent legislation, such as the proposed Initiative IL26-638, intends to restrict participation based on biological sex, requiring verification by healthcare providers. This approach, according to Rapinoe, is invasive and undermines the confidence and empowerment gained by women through sports.

She further expressed that sports are crucial for women’s confidence and highlighted the success of women who played elite-level sports, many of whom ascend to leadership roles.

In an article for Marie Claire, Rapinoe articulated that anti-trans legislation distracts from pressing issues and disproportionately harms women and girls. She emphasized that transgender individuals have been part of sports for a long time.

The discussion continues as debates over such policies remain contentious in today’s society.
