Meghan Markle has returned to the United Kingdom with more independence than during her time as a working royal. This move, experts suggest, may challenge the boundaries of Buckingham Palace.
Markle, 45, along with Prince Harry, 41, moved back to the U.K. with their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5. They plan to stay for an extended period while maintaining private, non-working royal status. They will have a private home outside London and keep their residence in Montecito, California. However, Markle pursuing media, business, and public projects from the U.K. might create new tensions with the institution she previously represented.
“The nightmare for the Palace is that they can’t be controlled,” said royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams. “Diary clashes may lead to royal engagements being overshadowed by what the Sussexes choose to do.”
Kinsey Schofield, host of “Kinsey Schofield Unfiltered,” believes Buckingham Palace will have limited control over the couple’s public and commercial activities since they no longer officially represent King Charles.
“They are private citizens and no longer working on behalf of the King,” Schofield said. “But Harry is still the King’s son, and Meghan is still the Duchess of Sussex, so there’s an inevitable association with the monarchy.”
Markle’s return as a private citizen marks a significant departure from her previous role as a working royal. She arrives with her own career team and support system.
“She has been vocal about her previous experiences, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be different now,” a source told People magazine. “The Sussexes’ support network is stronger than ever.”
Despite having more independence, Schofield noted that Buckingham Palace holds some power.
“The palace can’t control what they do but it controls access to the institution,” Schofield said. “Meghan may return without palace restrictions, but also without palace protection.”
Fitzwilliams elaborated on the potential conflicts with the royal calendar.
“Royal diaries are planned well in advance,” Fitzwilliams explained. “There are likely to be numerous clashes which will fuel fascination with the Sussexes.”
Schofield cautioned that repeated scheduling of announcements overlapping with royal engagements might create issues.
The couple’s 2021 interview with Oprah, their 2022 Netflix docuseries, and Harry’s memoir “Spare” revealed family strains, complicating their return to the U.K.
Helena Chard, a British broadcaster, suggests clearer expectations are necessary for the Sussexes’ return.
“Formalities need to be established,” Chard said. “These will be the ‘dos and don’ts’.”
Their return may involve more than just business interests. The couple views their longer stay as a chance to connect their children with Harry’s heritage. Archie and Lilibet recently joined their parents on a visit to the U.K., reuniting with Charles and visiting Princess Diana’s family.
Some experts believe Markle’s return may not necessarily deepen the rift with the royal family.
“I believe Meghan will initially adopt a more cautious approach,” said royal broadcaster Ian Pelham Turner. “She possesses empathy and intelligence to drive opportunities for various cultures in Britain.”
