The City of Highland Park held its annual Memorial Day observance in the auditorium of Highland Park High School on May 25. The event began at 11 a.m., featuring a bell ceremony honoring local veterans. After the program, attendees enjoyed a barbecue lunch outside in the inner courtyard.
Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering described the event as a chance to celebrate the community and country. The ceremony included speeches, performances by the Highland Park High School Band, and the playing of ‘Taps’ by bugle musicians.
Guest speakers included retired U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Sonja Marie Martin and U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Ryan M. Dunbar. Dunbar highlighted the strong community spirit of Highland Park, having lived there since July last year.
Martin, a resident since 2011, expressed love for Highland Park, commenting on the welcoming nature of the people. She was honored to speak at the event and noted Memorial Day’s significance in remembering sacrifices made by veterans and victims of past tragedies, such as the July 4, 2022 shooting.
Linda Iovino, a Highland Park High School alumna, represented the American Legion Auxiliary. She spoke of her father, Neil P. Iovino, a former prisoner of war during WWII, and emphasized the importance of appreciating veterans.
Karie Angell Luc covered the event for Pioneer Press.
