Mentorship in Conservation: Khalib Townsend’s Journey
PHILADELPHIA — Khalib Townsend, a seven-year-old, embarks on an adventure along the Audubon Discovery Center’s nature trail, sporting a bright blue waterproof jacket and binoculars. He’s passionate about birds and aims to be a conservation scientist to protect the Earth. Khalib shares his enthusiasm for studying wildlife. His interest in biology and conservation is unwavering.
Kids often ponder their future careers, but research indicates they struggle to understand their dream jobs. Many lose interest over time due to lack of mentorship. Khalib, however, has the support of his mother, Danielle Townsend. She introduced him to Keith Russell, a conservation scientist at the Discovery Center. Russell relates to Khalib’s passion for birds, understanding the barriers faced by young Black bird lovers.
“There are expectations that Black folks do this and Black folks don’t do that,” Russell notes. “It’s crucial to have support and be with people who understand your interest.”
Russell agreed to mentor Khalib, inviting him on a bird walk along the center’s trail. During the walk, Khalib asked Russell about his career path, supported by NPR’s visit.
The Conversation:
Khalib: How did you become passionate about birds?
Russell: I got interested in birds in the first grade. My parents fostered my interest. They gave me binoculars and bird books, and connected me with someone knowledgeable about birds. This journey led me to study biology in college and work in a museum before joining Audubon.
Khalib: What do you love most about your job?
Russell replied: “Sharing my love of birds and helping others is rewarding. I work to prevent birds from flying into windows, a major cause of bird deaths in the U.S.”
Philadelphia sees immense bird traffic due to the Atlantic Flyway. Many birds die from window strikes, which Russell strives to prevent using ropes and window dots at the Discovery Center.
Khalib: I’ve put stickers on my windows to prevent bird strikes.
Russell responds: “That’s clever, and it helps with songbirds, which often fly into windows.”
When Khalib asked why birds matter, Russell explained their beauty, songs, and presence in Philadelphia. Birds enrich urban life and need protection.
Khalib: Did birds evolve from flying dinosaurs?
Russell answered: “Birds and dinosaurs share similarities, with fossils indicating their evolutionary connection.”
A large pond at the Discovery Center attracts diverse waterfowl, adding to the area’s rich avian life.
