Lionel Messi made history by scoring his 17th career World Cup goal, setting a new record during a Group J match against Austria.
However, controversy arose when commentator Peter Schmeichel questioned the validity of Messi’s goal. During FOX’s halftime show, Schmeichel criticized Egyptian referee Amin Mohamed Omar’s decision.
I don’t think that goal should have stood, said Schmeichel, highlighting a penalty on Austria earlier in the game.Think about how they got the penalty. It was a kick from behind, through the player. Now, this (should be) a free kick.
The play in question began with a throw-in where Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister tripped Xaver Schlager, leading to Messi’s goal. Schmeichel insisted, That should have been a free kick. VAR should have taken that back. That is a clear and obvious mistake by the referee.
Despite Schmeichel’s objection, Argentina led 1-0, poised to start the tournament 2-0 after previously defeating Algeria 3-0 with Messi’s hat trick. Messi’s four goals in the tournament surpass Miroslav Klose’s record and mark his scoring streak across six World Cups.
Messi is also on track to finish as the game’s best distributor, tied with Diego Maradona for the most assists in World Cup history. After the game against Austria, Argentina, defending World Cup champions, will face Jordan in Dallas.
