The youth safety trial against Meta started Wednesday in a California federal court. Meta faces accusations of designing its platforms to keep young users, particularly teens and children, engaged in an addictive manner.
Jury selection took place in the U.S. District Court in Oakland, California. The case combines lawsuits filed by attorneys general from various states across the United States. Filed in 2023, the lawsuit claims Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, implemented harmful features to encourage “excessive use” among young users. It alleges Meta misled the public about potential mental and physical health risks and regularly collected data from users under 13 without parental consent.
“Meta has harnessed powerful technologies to entice, engage and ultimately ensnare youth and teens,” the lawsuit stated. “It has concealed the ways these platforms exploit and manipulate vulnerable consumers: teenagers and children. It ignored the damage these platforms caused to the mental and physical health of the nation’s youth.”
Initially filed by 29 states, the current trial focuses on the first four: California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey.
A Meta spokesperson expressed disagreement with these allegations, stating confidence that evidence will demonstrate their commitment to supporting young individuals. They emphasized Meta’s efforts, which include listening to parents, collaborating with experts and law enforcement, and conducting comprehensive research on important issues.
Earlier in the week, an appeals court denied Meta’s request to dismiss the case. The court also declined to drop numerous other online safety lawsuits against social media firms, ruling that appeals from Meta and TikTok were premature.
This trial highlights ongoing concerns about the safety and impact of social media on young users. It brings attention to the urgent need for companies to ensure the well-being and safety of minors using their platforms, while balancing engagement with user protection.
