In May 2026, Meta employees experienced significant changes as the company shifted its focus toward artificial intelligence. In April, Meta announced that 8,000 employees, representing 10 percent of its workforce, would be laid off by May 20. Additionally, 7,000 staff members would be reassigned to A.I.-related projects, marking a substantial shift in the company’s strategic direction.
On Wednesday, layoffs began in Singapore, with emails sent to affected workers at 4 a.m. local time. By early morning, employees in Britain, the United States, and other regions were also informed. Many workers exchanged somber messages online and checked the internal directory to discern team changes. To express solidarity, hundreds reacted with salad emojis on Meta’s internal forums, symbolizing a salute to colleagues. Notably, a recent hire was also laid off, highlighting the extent of the workforce reduction.
On the same day, Meta’s offices were largely vacant. Janelle Gale, head of human resources, directed employees to work from home. Office walls were adorned with fliers opposing Meta’s program to collect employee data for A.I. training, as noted by eight staff members. Anticipating job losses, some employees grabbed free office snacks and laptop chargers as precautionary measures.
The situation at Meta, which comprises Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, illustrates the repercussions of A.I. transition on employment. Other tech companies have followed suit, driven by the rapid advancement of technology. For instance, Cisco announced the termination of 4,000 positions to allocate more resources to A.I. Similarly, Microsoft, Block, and Coinbase have recently disclosed job cuts or buyouts linked to tech transitions.
