Meteorite Crashes Through New Jersey Home, Aids Scientific Discovery

On July 16, 2024, a meteorite crashed into a home in Hillsborough, New Jersey, creating unexpected insights into asteroid composition. The incident occurred after the asteroid streaked across the sky above New York City, startling onlookers across the northeast.

At 11:17 a.m., the sky lit up as the asteroid traveled through Earth’s atmosphere. Observers from Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania reported the sighting and described a sonic boom echoing across the region.

NASA initially concluded the asteroid, roughly a foot in length, would not survive its atmospheric journey, believing it to vaporize. However, evidence from a damaged home in Hillsborough proved otherwise.

At 11:20 a.m., a resident working in his home office felt a strong impact that shook the building. He initially thought his kitchen cabinets had collapsed. Upon investigating, he found a hole in the ceiling of the main bedroom.

The room exuded a strong sulfur-like odor, and a fine dust coated surfaces. Black soot covered the walls and ceiling. On his pillow lay several black rocks—fragments of the meteorite.

The homeowners, preferring anonymity, expressed relief that no one was injured. Scientists have since examined the fragments to better understand the makeup of this unusual asteroid.
