Michigan Republican Tom Smith Rejoins Congressional Race

A Michigan Republican, Tom Smith, who had paused his campaign and endorsed an opponent, won the primary and is back campaigning. He is targeting Democratic Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet in Michigan’s 8th Congressional District.

Back in the Race

Smith appeared at a GOP unity brunch in Macomb County. He declared his intent to run and sought support from Republican activists to challenge Rivet. Smith did not respond to inquiries about resuming his campaign officially.

“My name is Tom Smith, and I’m running for the 8th Congressional District to unseat communist comrade Rivet,” Smith announced. “And I’ll need your help to do it.”

Winning Despite Withdrawal

Smith had previously won his primary, even after he had withdrawn and supported Al Lemmo, who placed third in the GOP primary. Smith’s victory came over Amir Hassan, the Trump-endorsed candidate, who finished second.

In a statement to CNN, Smith expressed feeling honored to advance to the general election against the Democrats. He aims to work with Speaker Johnson and the GOP to expand their House majority, aligning with President Trump’s agenda.

Trump’s Endorsed Candidate Reacts

Following his defeat, Hassan posted a video on social media, acknowledging his loss without excuses. He expressed optimism about the future, congratulated opponents, and reiterated it was time to ‘flip the eighth.’

“I fell short last night. It was a tough race,” Hassan stated, addressing his supporters from his car. He remained positive about future opportunities.
