DETROIT, MI – Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers has extended an invitation to Democrats dissatisfied with their party’s nominee in Michigan. During a campaign event, Rogers introduced his “Democrats for Mike Rogers” coalition, aiming to attract support from Democratic voters who feel unrepresented by their current nominee.
Rogers, a former congressman and ex-FBI agent, is running for the Senate after a narrow loss in the previous election. He seeks to win over Democrats disenchanted by the recent Democratic primary outcome, where Abdul El-Sayed narrowly defeated a more moderate candidate, Rep. Haley Stevens.
To Democrat voters who feel their nominee doesn’t represent them and their values, you have a home with us. I’m not asking you to be a Republican. I’m asking for the opportunity to earn your trust. Our door is open.
Recent polls suggest a close race between El-Sayed and Rogers. A Fox News survey shows Rogers with a slight four-point lead, supported by strong unity among Republicans, while El-Sayed’s backing among Democrats remains at 91%. Notably, non-DSA Democrats and independents display lower levels of support for El-Sayed.
Rogers is capitalizing on this division, signaling hope for a broader appeal. He emphasized the significance of values in this election, appealing to Democrats willing to cross party lines. One such supporter, Chelsea from West Bloomfield, expressed her shift from lifelong Democratic support to backing Rogers due to concerns about El-Sayed’s stance.
The El-Sayed campaign countered Rogers’ appeal by emphasizing potential ties to former President Donald Trump. Spokesperson Cole Wozniak criticized Rogers for potentially prioritizing Trump’s agenda over Michigan’s interests, including economic and foreign policy concerns.
El-Sayed, if elected, would become the first Muslim senator in U.S. history. His campaign focuses on progressive ideals, highlighting policies like “Medicare-for-all” and challenging established political norms. Recent endorsements from prominent progressives, such as Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, reinforce his campaign’s left-leaning platform.
Rabbi Asher Lopatin, supporting Rogers, voiced concerns about El-Sayed’s past statements and highlighted issues faced by Jewish voters in the state. He noted a growing movement among typically Democratic voters considering Rogers due to discomfort with El-Sayed’s policies.
Lopatin also referenced a state Democratic convention marked by hostility towards pro-Israel stances, a sentiment echoed by many attendees. This tension has influenced some voters to reconsider their political alignment in the upcoming election.
As the election approaches, voter perspectives influenced by rhetoric and policy positions will play a decisive role in determining Michigan’s Senate seat outcome.
